Rolette County Wellness Coalition Meeting Minutes
Rolette County Wellness Coalition met on Thursday April 12th, 2012 with 5 members present. They were Karen Armstrong, Peggy and Andy Johnson, Kimberly Lemieux and Judy Martinson.
Karen acted as president and called the meeting to order. Kimberly approved the March minutes and Andy seconded them.
Old business-A letter to Dunseith City Hall was sent regarding the smoking. Judy also talked to the Sheriff and they are working on updating the jail policy regarding spit tobacco. Ted Harrington was approached and the North 40 will be a smoke free bar. Judy presented to the county commissioners and no action was taken. Peggy also brought up about “Day of the Young Child” April 19th for preschool and Head Start children. This will be at the College. Also the American Legion Auxiliary is collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald’s House.
Committee reports:
Health/Wellness/Occupant Protection:
· Kimberly stated that she has been getting calls on doing SIDNE. There is $8000 in non fed account. Kimberly will draft a letter to the board of health because the money will be used for a traffic safety program.
· Texting as a distraction was addressed while driving.
· Special Assignment Pizza was done for the second time in Rolette. The ND Farm Bureau sponsors it. There were 247 students. This was the 2nd time it was held in Rolette.
Nutrition/Fitness:
· Karen is doing sessions on “Banking on Bones” with the 4th grade classes in the county.
· Also, Wellness screenings for the county employees will be held on April 24th. There are 11 employees doing it.
· Micro-lap is doing the 12 weeks of Wellness thru the cancer grant.
· Car seat check was done thru WIC yesterday in Rolette. There were 5 checks completed. May 22 it will be done at the Rolla Fire Hall from 4-7PM. May 23 it will be held at Dunseith WIC and May 24th it will be held at Belcourt WIC.
Tobacco & Other Drugs:
· Air Quality Study in Bismarck was reported on
· Excise tax discussed and the importance of raising the tax to decrease numbers on youth not starting and adults cutting back or quitting because of the increased price.
· Measure 2 was discussed
Other Business:
· Karen brought up about the ND Cancer Coalition site and there is information available to print.
· Safety Day is scheduled for June 3rd, Karen is willing to do a session on hydration. There is a registration fee of $5 per youth.
· Peggy-Tutor ND is free tutoring. The state library is 5-9 Sunday thru Thursday. It is a National program. Also she is promoting “Library to go”.
· Peggy and Andy informed us about 2 new programs called sliderocket.com and dropbox.com.

Rolette County Wellness Coalition met Thursday March 8, 2012 at noon. Those present were Karen, Jeanna, Barb, Linda W., Peggy and Andy J., Jackie G. and Judy M.
Jeanna presided the meeting. Correction on the January and February minutes were Barb is implementing the mini cancer grant instead of applying for the grant and the Breast feeding group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of the month and the breast feeding coalition meets quarterly. Corrections will be made; they were approved by Karen and seconded by Barb.
Jeanna presided the meeting. No Old Business
Barb suggested we change committees: They are as follows: Heath/Wellness/Occupant Protection and Tobacco and other drugs.
Health/Wellness/Occupant Protection:
· Dr. Glasner is the Health officer now. He is very involved with the fluoride in the water and educating the county city council members.
· Dr. Glasner is also addressing the standing orders for Public Health.
· Cancer Coalition grant is a mini grant and will be focusing on a business and doing an assessment of the overall health. They are planning on collaborating with Presentation Medical Center and Rolla Northland Clinic as well as Extension service.
· Public Health Awareness week is April 2-8. The theme is “Making a Healthier Community”
· May is stroke awareness. Community education will be done.
· Linda Warner is on the ND Heart and Stroke Advisory Council. There is access to more materials regarding strokes.
· The state health department has scheduled car seat checks. April 11th it coincides with WIC at the Rolette clinic. Other checks are May 22, 23, 24th.
· Andy stated that TMCC is concerned about the water issue with fracking and what the pollution will do to the water resources.
· Andy stated Radon is also being monitored at the college and there is a correlation with radon and cancer. Deb Hunter and Audrey LaVallie also are working with radon.
· Peggy talked about the Rolla Library. Elizabeth Jacob is here today from 2-8PM. Available is health, wellness, ND free tutoring and library to go. Also QR codes are available to target kids and hopefully will be able to link it to a website. Also a way to get information to Day Care providers on the reservation to address issues they providers might be addressing.
· Karen stated the Wellness conference at Turtle Mountain High School is July 10, 11, and 12th. They are working on an adult program addressing self esteem in males. Also post traumatic stress with children/women and pregnancy. As well as social media attacking children and parents.
· Day of the Young Child is April 19th. This address head start and children of students.-Renae BearKing is the person in charge at the college for this program.
· April 4th at TMCC is a presentation by Gary Farmer; it will be on getting involved in an acting career, with a concert at 7PM that evening.
Tobacco & other Drugs:
· Jackie stated TM Tobacco Coalition will meet Monday with the tribe re: KC Hall and user fee.
· Judy stated Kick butts is March 21st, the same day as Prevention Expo at TM High School. St John Elementary is signing tobacco free pledges and they are posted on the lockers in the commons area. St John school is doing posters encouraging people to stop smoking. The school is in 4 divisions and there will be prizes given. The Turtle Mountain Star is notified and the events are registered on the Kick Butts website.
· The Rolette Tobacco Coalition was recently started in Rolette to begin work on being the first community in Rolette County to go smoke free.
· Safety Day is June 3rd at Rolette Country Club.
· ND Quits is the new site instead of quitline/quitnet. All the same benefits.
· A handout was given on sweet flavored tobacco products.
· Yesterday Curt showed me a new site for RCPH and you may go into www.rolettecountypublichealth.blogspot.comIt is just started and I sent more information for him to put on the site. It will allow us to make additions and corrections to us
· Tobacco Free North Dakota coalition will go forth to find a source willing to introduce increasing the excise tax to the North Dakota legislation.
· Judy will talk to the Dunseith City Hall regarding smoke free issues. Also talk to the Harrington’s to consider making the new “North 40” smoke free. Linda did state that the Heart of America Medical campus was tobacco free and now they have an area for the smokers to use. Judy will talk to Law Enforcement because they need to clamp down on George Pitsiladis at the Village CafĂ©.

Rolette County Wellness Coalition met on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 5:0 p.m. Members present were Karen, acting president; Judy, acting secretary, Linda Haggerty; and Jeanna. The minutes will be approved in the March meeting.
Old Business – Linda reported the men’s wellness in January was well attended. There were 31 participants.
New Business
Alcohol, tobacco & Other Drugs-Judy
· Rolette Ag Show is February 15th, Judy and Renae will have booths. Renae’s will be immunizations
· Safety day is June 3rd at Rolette Country Club from 2-5PM for grades 1-6 and adults with supper.
· Meet with Rolette, Dunseith and Rolla schools to update comprehensive tobacco free school policies. Attempting to reach Ojibwa and Dunseith Day schools.
· The Sheriff department now allows the prisoners to use spit tobacco-will talk to the sheriff about that issue.
· A new coalition will be starting in Rolette and the first meeting is February 28th, at noon at the Valle Lutheran Church to continue to work on smoke free Rolette. A poster was shown and corrections will be made. This walso include an endorsement form. These will be sent to all businesses and told to share with their staff.
Occupant Protection-
· Judy read Peggy’s e-mail about the college trying to do a silent auction to raise money for scholarships in memory of students who have died in recent years. This would allow displays on preventable causes such as smoking, wearing seat belts etc. They would do this during Family Week or the week of Easter.
Nutrition/Fitness-Karen
· Starting “Banking on Bones” sessions to 4th graders which address life style and food choices.
· New 4-H effort for tribal youth as a mentoring program
· Jeanna addressed Breast feeding coalition is the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. It is going well.
· Sandra Poitra wrote a grant for grocery store tours and WIC is involved with that.
Health/Wellness-
· Elizabeth Hanson reported to Judy that she is going to have a class on treating stress and taking care of stress using diet and exercises. This will be May or June. She is working thru Cornell University.
Other Business
· No other businesses.

Rolette County Wellness Coalition met on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 5:0 p.m. Members present were Judy, acting president; Lynn, secretary, Grace; Barb; and Jeanna. November’s minutes (Grace and Judy) were approved.
Old Business – Grace reported only Rolette will be participating in the Biggest Loser Contest.
New Business
Health and Wellness – Barb
· Dr. Glasner has agreed to be the Health Officer for Public Health.
· Barb will begin the application for the Cancer Mini Grant.
· Grace reported Northland is holding a Men’s Wellness Special.
Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs – Judy
· Judy would like supporters for her Smoke-free City Ordinance at the Rolette City Council meeting on February 6 at 7:00
· Judy has made two flyers, What is Preemption and Tobacco Toll in North Dakota-Dangers of Secondhand Smoke as well as a grocery bag stuffer on preemption.
· Rolette County Health Board will be acting on a smoke-free resolution.
Occupant Protection –
· No report.
Nutrition and Fitness – Jeanna
· Breast Feeding Support Group meets in Belcourt at 5:00 on the first Tuesday of each month. All (not just WIC clients) are welcome.
Other Business
· Grace reported two new locums at Northland.
