The Rolette Tobacco Coalition met at noon on April 24, 2012 at the Valle Church. Gary Linson, Linda Haggerty, Barb Frydenlund, Rev. John Hesford and Judy Martinson were present.
Barb approved the minutes and Gary seconded them. A correction was made for the Mission Statement. It is “Rolette community working toward a tobacco free future.”
Linda nominated Grace Brown to be secretary. Grace should be back for the May meeting from her lengthy illness.
Judy did present to the Valle youth group on tobacco awareness and the coalition. A report was given as to how it went. Rev. Hesford felt a greater emphasis should be on the individual needs.
Service group reviewed and added to the list is Relay for Life and the contact person is Lee Rahn. Also the American Cancer group and we were wondering who the contact person is.
A discussion was held on the different methods to use when a person is dealing with opposition to the tobacco world making people aware of the different tobacco issues. Smoking infringes on all people pertaining to the health care costs. Also, there is a difference on life insurance premiums. The question was brought up; should there be increased insurance premiums for obesity, etc?
The need to make it difficult to smoke thus target the corporate level. A suggestion is to increase the tobacco excise tax. Currently the ND excise tax is $0.44/pack. We should change the social norm and it takes years without the government intervention.
Ask the youth what would make a good impact on convincing the community to decrease smoking. Judy states Cavalier just had the first reading to become a smoke free community. It will go into effect after the second reading.
